What are the problems of talking to a poster ?

- Tony Hawk`s answers sometimes make no sense for Sam.
- Sam will forget to talk to real people.
- He is not used to face problems on his own.

Why is Sam talking to Tony Hawk ?

- Tony Hawk is his Idol.
- He admires Tony Hawk.
- There are many similarities between his family situation and Tony Hawk`s.
- He has read the autobiography several times.
- Tony Hawk is like a father for Sam.
- He needs someone to talk to.

An other poem:

They don`t understand

I`m confused about life
it seems like no one understands me
especially my parents
they try to run my life
but they don`t understand
my life`s my own to run
they can`t run it
it seems we live in two different worlds
at two different times
they should know no matter how much
they try to control my life
I`ll always rebel
I don`t care about the punishment
because they can`t take away my
freedom, hope, dreams, memories
and people I love ever.
I wish they would understand
they never had to go through
the problems us teens are going through now
they would never understand
back then there weren`t so many problems us
teens face now
they just simply don`t understand
us teens

A poem, which goes with Alicia`s feelings:

Who am I...

I am a girl that does not know what to do.
I am a girl that scared how about you?
I made a mistake.
I feel so fake.
I can not take back what I did.
And now I have a kid.
My parents are so mad.
And I feel so bad.
I have a baby this is true.
Someone please tell me what to do.

Tony Hawk

- Tony Hawk was born in San Diego, California.
- Hawk began skateboarding at age eight after his older brother
bought him a skateboard.
- At the age of 11, he won his first contest.
- Aged 16, he was considered as the best skater of the world.
- He became eleven times in series world champion.
- On July 27, 1999, Hawk was the first skater to land
two-and-a-half revolutions.
-
He also appeared in many films.

Nick Hornby

- Nick Hornby was born on 17. April 1957 in Redhill.
- He studied literature at the university in Cambridge.

- While studying he wrote many radio dramas,
television plays and spectacles.
- 1992 he began to write books.
- Since he has won lots of prices.
- A few books were picturise like Fever Pitch.

After finishing the novel

I would like to ask Nick Hornby:

Is the book based on a true story?
Why do you use the future in the book?
Why did you write about a pregnancy of a sixteen year old girl?

It mainly treats of the pregnancy of a 16 year old girl, Alicia, in the book. But I enjoyed reading the book because Nick Hornby explicates this theme exciting, although it was mostly the same.
I recommend the book rather to youths than to adults because the parents maybe had or have got their own problems in the past or at the moment. So they could mean the story is written surreal.
In my opinion the End is very good because it isn`t a normal Happy End like in many films or books. The Ending isn`t immediately predictable and after reading you end with a good feeling.

After having read more than half the novel

Indeed it happened that what I had guessed but it was exciting to read these chapters because it is written so authentic.

After reading until the 11th chapter

In the 6th chapter I had problems to understand why the author changed the tense. While reading I thought the scene was switched 9 months into the future. In the first place as the next chapter started I noticed that Sam had dreamed.

Fascinating is how Sam and Alicia deal with the pregnancy especially because I don`t know youths in my country, who are pregnant.

I´m confused about Sam as he did a runner to Hastings because I thought he isn`t so afraid compared with the future.

After reading the opening chapters of the book

I liked reading these few pages, but I read to slow. Therefore I became impatient.

Hornby tries to write in youth language, but it`s used not always well. Never less I find it`s fantastic that he uses this speech. Funny is that Sam, the leading character, speaks with a poster of Tony Hawk about his problems. Even more often as with his mum.
I can`t identify me with Sam because he has got totally different interests than me.

In my opinion the first part is successful because you can see many connections between the story and the real life.

Before reading the book "Slam" by Nick Hornby

I`m looking forward to read "Slam" because I didn`t read any English books just now. As I was younger I read a few books in English on my own and in school we red three :
"They`re after us", "Rosso" and "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the night-Time".

The book is looking very interesting. The picture in the front let me think about what the book will tell me. On the back side the summary of the book make me being anxious to read "Slam". In my opinion this book is a good choice because it deals with problems of the youth. Maybe I will get some tips how I have to manage problems or I will think about that because of the book.

As for the rest I heard lots of meanings about the author Nick Hornby.
For example that he would write really good books and use the right language.
He would be also a No. 1 bestselling author.

I´m curious if I will like the book.
